August 12th Race Report
Another weird night at the track. All day rain was predicted for the evening hours. A few sprinkles were in the air, but it never stopped the racing. I've been known to say, "it never rains at Thompson."
I arrived early (2:04) trying to get my normal pit spot that I have use most of last few years. I heard that mini driver camped out to get it. Rats!
The 3 car was back, good. Competition as normal. They worked their butts off.
First warm up... car was possibly the best handling car I've ever had, but I felt a skip. Found issue in the distributor, solved.
After next warm up found that left front caliper was dragging. This would plague us the rest of the night. After the heat race we pulled the caliper, NE parts truck had a caliper, but it needed a different banjo bolt (where line bolts to it). We searched the pits, no luck. Jon drove to parts store, no caliper or banjo bolt. We ended up rushing to re-install faulty caliper. Quickly tried to bleed the brakes as they called us to line up. Jon, Jimmy, Brad, and Michelle were stars once again.
Feature race: We started 14th, we went the first 15 laps without a caution. Spent much of that following the 31 car, pretty wide that thing. The 02 (just ahead of the 31) had been leaking heavily while we were under green. He continued to dump water out behind the left front wheel under caution. He must have had a bigger water tank than my camper in there. I finally pulled over and told an official. Several laps later they got him to stop (they had to run in front of his car). By this time my windshield was a mess. Many cautions over the last 5 laps. Mostly the same cast of characters bending up their cars.
With some air in the brake lines, a dragging LF caliper that caused brake fade, I would struggle to get into the corners well. Picked off a few more cars over the last few laps. Brought it home in 4th. With several cars running the blocking line each week, it may be time to borrow "TC's three bump rule". Passing these guys without contact is nearly impossible. Their choice. Going into the corner low, drifting up high in the middle, then chopping low out, then out to the wall on the straight (unless I'm on the inside still)...getting old guys. If you don't leave 8 ft of track one side or the other, all the way around the track, YOU ARE JUST BLOCKING!
The 3 team would win! Hard work usually does pay off.
A re-cap in honor of the #4 modified team. We started the evening 44 points in the lead. We would start the feature 14th. We would finish 4th. We increased our point lead by 14 as the 36 team had an off night. We have lots of changes 4 our car planned be4 the tour mod show on the 19th. We will be going all out 4 our 4th win of the year. Don't forget, practice starts 4 hours early this week.
cheers, see you all Thursday
