World Series Race Report
After all that transpired between the Sept. 22nd race (win #6) and the world series, the results, and my feelings should not be a surprise. Work at the big Nuke plant (millstone). I starting working a 7-10 schedule on nights in September. Working 35 days without a day off wears on the body. My faithful companion (dog) Shane had been sick. He passed away on the Wednesday before the world series. I still miss my buddy a whole bunch. The repeated rain outs. Holy crap Batman. Who would have guessed all that????
The end result was a driver without his heart really into the last race. The old 73 had had many changes made with the belief that we would have a couple of races to do some testing for next year. All the changes... only about 3 laps of actual warm ups. All of them held up by other cars, in very cold track conditions.
So we come up on Sunday's race (rain forced Saturday to be cancelled again). I was trying to get my body to get off night shift. I woke up at 2:09am and never slept another wink. I thought the car was OK on Saturday...but who knew.....
The race.....jeez.....chassis was about the worst it has been since I can remember. Brakes locking up, loose as a goose, etc. Had changed the plugs Sunday am and may have messed something up there as motor seemed a bit flat.... Lost several spots on a restart when the 26 bobbled a bit in front of me and I had to lift. The race just didn't work out well. Highlight??? Believe it or not!!! A great race with Paul Coutu in the 79 car. We were both struggling a bit with the chassis. He had made up a few spots on my botched restart...I had to re-pass him. We went side by side for several laps and I don't believe we touched....He eventually applied a bit too much throttle, slipped high in turn 4, and I got away. That is the way it should always be. Good clean racing.
We ended up 5th. Really bad??? heck no. Just not the way we wanted to cap off our season. Later in the stands???? Almost threw the first punch of my adult life. Was accused of hitting another car. Funny how a camera running on my car the whole race didn't see it. Did see their car get bounced a few times by others.
Look for for a season re-cap, and updates as we prepare for next season. Unless an offer to drive for someone else...we should be back stronger than ever.
