PASS Pro Stock Event Report -May 15th
With lots of time between the Icebreaker event and the second
race of the year, we set out to do some additional changes to
the car. I counted on Jon, Jimmy, and engine builder Mike
Pettit to do a bit more of the stuff than normal. My work
schedule had me pretty busy working 72 hours per week.
We made some significant changes to the engine and to the bars
protecting the radiator etc.
Race day....with one round of practice we knew we had to get the
car right in a hurry. Car was good...driver a bit conservative
in that practice. 5 lbs of lead, 2 deg. timing change, one
round of wedge, and some snugging up of leaky exhaust were all
done under threatening skies.
Meanwhile on the track the other divisions began their
features. I headed to the top row to spot for Todd Ceravolo
during his race. They had overcome some challenges during
practice with their new Dodge power plant's cooling system.
Turn one of lap one the 43 car locked up his brakes and punted
Todd into the wall. No penalty was given to the 43 car...go
figure. Todd's day was done. I headed back to the 73 car.
Thankfully the track decided against drawing for start positions
from a can. They opted to invert the top 16 finishers from the
icebreaker. That method puts most of the best running cars in
the middle of the field. Good for the fans, good for us racers
also. I was to start 12th, Keith D. 13th, and Glenn B. 14th. I
knew I would have to pass the 36, the 55, the 74 and other good
cars to get a win.
I had made a bet with a friend that I would improve my finish
over starting position by 22 spots (or win). Starting 12th
required me to win the race to win the bet. Yikes, even I
didn't like those odds. I hadn't pushed the car hard enough in
practice to judge whether I had the best car. After looking at
the line-up, I liked what I saw. I felt the outside line was
going to be the best place early in the race. By lap 4 the 73
car had carried me up to 4th (S.F.G. schro). KS's penny jar was
nervous.
I would make my way to second without touching a car...just the
way it should be. Once in 2nd, there were several cautions...
I would repeatedly try to find 7 feet of pavement on one side of
the leader or another. Funny how there never was. I think
Thompson is about 50 feet wide??? Must just look wider from the
stands. With many tire marks on my car I finally forced my way
by the leader. First pass for the lead by that method ever for
me. Even us old dogs can learn new tricks if forced to.
Once in the lead we quickly opened up a substantial lead.
Nearly a straight away between 1st and 2nd place. I usually
don't feel the need to show that speed off. Today wasn't
normal, as my dander was up. It takes a bunch to fire up the
old leadfoot into a state of anger. Yup...I was certainly
there.
We have more plans for improvement....A solid run on Thursday
June 2nd is planned, and a win on Mod Tour / Busch North event
on Sunday June 12th.
I can barely wait, as our division looks to be very competitive
yet again.
